Answer: As she states in the poem “It’s because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into” I feel like she describes it in this way in purpose of showing us unity and to remember from what we came from and how we can improve, to learn from out previous mistakes. Simply because we are “American” doesn’t mean we are perfect in any way shape or form, by no means are we the country we can be and will be if we stay united and equal. I personally wouldn’t change any words to her description since it was factual and perfectly stated.
