Many colonists felt that they should not pay these taxes, because they were passed in England by Parliament, not by their own colonial governments. They protested, saying that these taxes violated their rights as British citizens. The colonists started to resist by boycotting, or not buying, British goods.
taxes increased the tension between the colonists and the british. the colonists believed that they were a separate group of people compared to british people. therefore, they believed they should not have to be taxed. colonists first wrote a letter to king george the third telling him how unfair taxes were. after they were not listened to they began defying the taxes and buying home goods instead. eventually they also dumped tea into the harbor, known as the boston tea party, and began suiting up for war.
