what does it mean to be a good friend? what qualities do you look for when making new friends?

I look to see if they are kind, trustworthy and respectful and also fun but i also have this feeling though like i should not be around this person they will not be good for me. But that probably comes from having a lot of bad people in your life and then turning it around and dropping all of them to find people that are beneficial for me.
