(2x + 3y = 8)x5
(5x + 6y = 17)x-2

10x + 15y = 40
-10x - 12y = -34
cancel 10x and -10x

3y = 6
y = 2

replace y in one of the equations with 2

2x + 3(2) = 8

solve for x

2x + 6 = 8
2x = 2
x = 1

check:
2(1) + 3(2) =
2 + 6 = 8

5(1) + 6(2) =
5 + 12 = 17
