Digestion is simply the break down of food into smaller sizes (fragments) that can be absorbed by the body of a living organism as nutrients while releasing energy through a catabolic process.
In Biology, the organs and body parts that plays an active role in the digestive system are referred to as accessory organs.
Basically, accessory organs of the digestive system include all of the following:
- Teeth.
- Pancreas.
- Tongue.
- Gall bladder.
- Salivary glands.
- Liver.
Generally, both pancreas and liver are essential organs that release gastrointestinal substances which help to break down food in the small intestine of a living organism.
