George Washington was an enormously popular general. Why didn't he try to become a king? He believed in a republican form of government. He knew the army would be hard to control. He thought future monarchs would abuse power. He was afraid he would be assassinated.
He would not have wanted other presidents or monarchs after him to abuse power, so delegated a more simple form of government which is what we have today.
