Why cannot sound travel through outer space?

sound needs an atmosphere to travel around and everyone knows space ain't got an atmosphere, also the speed of sound is 340 metres per second through the air. it travels so much faster on water or solids, but in a vacuum like space there is no matter for the sound to travel through.
