This condition remains so until the temperature hits 4° Celsius. After that point, the water starts to expand until it reaches 0° Celsius. By this time the water would have added an additional 9% of its original cubic dimension.

Another term that can be used interchangeably with cubic expansivity is volume expansivity.

This refers to the rate of change in the volume of the liquid compared with the rate of change in the temperature.

One great example of the application of this knowledge in real life is in the way automobile radiators are designed.

During cold weather, people usually top up their radiator with coolants. This is due to the apparent contraction of the liquid.

Where there is no fail-safe, the engine gets up and the coolant expands throwing most of it on the floor. Modern radiators now come with added pockets that can collect excess overheated fluid from the radiator.
