The carousel has been around for a long time. Young noblemen used to participate in a game of ring-spearing. They would ride their horses at full speed and attempt to spear rings hanging from posts or branches. The carousel helped the young riders train for these competitions. It allowed the noblemen to practice spearing the rings while not actually riding horses. By 1700, many carousels were built just for amusement.
