In 1831 a slave uprising occurred in Southampton County known as the Nat Turner Rebellion. This insurrection occurred after a young slave named Nat Turner took the place of preacher of his community and convinced them of make the rebelion.
As seen in the image, more than half of the population of Southampton were African-American slaves, so an insurrection would be successful in a simple way. Additionally, neighboring counties had even more slave populations.
However this insurrection was unsuccessful, it only lasted two months in which the violence against the slaves intensified and they were sentenced to death, including Nat Turner.
