The value of 8 in 8596 is 100 times the value of 8 in 985
To do this type of problem we can really sound them out. What I mean by that is say where the 8 is in particular.
When you look at 8596 you say eight THOUSAND. Therefore it is in the thousand spot. Now look at 985 you say nine hundred and EIGHTY five. Because we know that it isn’t in the hundreds spot because 9 is in it then we go to the next value which is the 10’s spot.
Now we want to look at the difference between the 1000 and 10 spot. How do you get 10 to 1000? Multiply by 100 and add two zeros to therefore get 1000. This would mean that the value of 8 in 8596 is 100 times the value of 8 in 985.
