The answer to this problem is the narrator suggests that ambition is "the American Passion".
In "The Egg," Andrew Weir considers succeeding and climbing up the ladder as the American passion. It's evident in the line, "The American passion for getting up in the world took possession of them" that what is commonly referred to as the American Dream is the goal of the narrator's parents. They want to make a name for themselves by climbing up the ladder through hard work.

Hope this helps!
