Dionysia was a great festival in ancient Athens in honor of Dionysus, the god of wine, whose central events were theatrical performances of dramatic tragedies, later comedies were included. It was the second most important event in ancient Athens.
But originally, Dionysia was a rural festival in Eleutherae, Attica, celebrating the cultivation of vines, and it is believed that it was originally not associated with Dionysius. This original festival was held during the winter, in the month of Poseideon, the month that straddling the winter solstice, and was a characteristic procession during the festival.
