The timbre is important because it’s a musical sound that is different from its pitch and intensity.

A difference between a whole step and a half step on a piano is the distance. If there is distance between the first two notes in a major scale, it is a whole step. Ex: G, G#, A. While the notes B, C and F#, G are half steps because of the distance between them.
