The Knights differed from the National Labor Union, the first national association of workers, in that they accepted Blacks and women and unskilled workers.
The American Federation of Labor was made up of craft unions and committed to "bread-and-butter" unionism. Its goals were narrower but also more realistic than those of the Knights. It sought to increase workers' wages, reduce their hours, and improve their working conditions.

The American Federation of Labor is the full form of AFL, which was organized in the year 1886. The main goal of this federation was to coordinate skilled artists into national unions comprising of others in the identical business. The main objective of the AFL was not political and intended only at fewer working hours, raised wages, and safer working conditions. The main difference between the two can be seen in the fact that the Knight of Labors didn't focus on specific workers issues like the American Federation of Labor did.
