Why was the Ottoman Empire broken into numerous smaller countries at the end of World War I?

After secret talks and agreements leading up to and during World War I, at the end of the war the Allies founded the League of Nations, which divided the Ottoman Empire into spheres of influence and legal mandates. The Ottoman Empire officially came to an end in 1922 when the title of Ottoman Sultan was eliminated.
