To what extent do you think Proctor is to blame for his own downfall?

Answer:

Proctor is a tragic hero, a man with many good traits who succumbs to pride and lust. In that sense, despite the harshness of his context, he is partially to blame for his downfall.

Explanation:

It´s his affair whit Abigail Williams, and the consequent jealousy of his lover and his wife, which starts the mass hysteria in the story.

When he realizes that only by confessing his adultery can he stop Abigail, his pride won´t let him do it. By the time he decides to confess is too late, as he ends up arrested and eventually killed.
