Jan's age is 3 years less than twice Tritt's age. The sum of their ages is 30. Find their ages. Write and solve the equation

Tritt's age is represented by x:
(x) Tritt + (2x-3) Jan = 30
x+2x-3=30
3x-3=30
3x=30+3
3x=33
x=33÷3
x=11
Tritt is 11 years old.
Jan is 2x-3 = 2(11)-3 = 22-3 = 19 years old.
11+19 is 30 (their ages together)

Jan (x) is 19 and Tritt (y) is 11.

Jan = 2(Tritt) - 3  .......    x = 2(y) - 3

Jan + Tritt = 30   .......     x + y = 30

2y - 3 + y = 30

3y            = 33

y              = 11

x + 11 = 30

x         = 30 - 11

x         = 19
