how do I illustrate a time elapse word problem.
Person left at 8AM arrived at destination at 5:30 PM. Stopped for lunch for 50 minutes at 11:45 am. How long was person driving?

I am not sure, but I will try my best to answer...

So you add up on how much time he was eating and driving: which would be 9 hours and 30 min.

Then you subtract 50 min from it.. which would equal to: 8 hours and 40 min. 

So the answer is: 8 hours and 40 min.
