When people become too reliant on the law to be their moral guide or compass, they may not develop an autonomous moral code, or they may engage in activities that are not morally good, but that are legal anyway.

For example, slavery was legal in many places in history, and people from these places often justified having slaves simply because it was legal, without looking into the moral consequences of such an act. A person who develops a moral compass on their own, would understand the grievances of slavery, whether it is legal or not.
