The 10% Rule is when energy in an ecosystem is passed from one trophic level to the next. Only 10% will of the energy will be passed on. 

Trophic level: Position of an organism in the food chain or on the energy pyramid.

10 percent rule : It states that when an energy is transfered from one trophic level to the next trophic level in an ecosystem then , only 10 percent of the received energy will be passed to next trophic level .

This rule introduced by Raymond Lindeman.

Suppose if producer received 1000 joule from sunlight then only 100J is transfer to the next level (Secondary level ).And then , 10 J is transfer from secondary level to tertiary level.

Therefore, this rule is called 10 percent rule because every level after primary level  received  10 percent energy of the energy received by previous level.
