I think its probably because of the large area they cant go over. it would take days according to how large the mountain or desserts are. it would take a long period to finally talk to each other.
these would affect trade and exchange of ideas because both regions would be hard on the people. mountains would be difficult to get through and deserts would be hard to cross due to the heat.
