Change the denominators, because to subtract, you need the same denominator.

[tex] \frac{5}{3} - \frac{1}{2} [/tex]

The common multiple is 3 x 2 and 2 x 3 ⇒ 6

[tex] \frac{5*2}{3*2} - \frac{1*3}{2*3} [/tex]

[tex] \frac{10}{6} - \frac{3}{6} [/tex]

[tex] \frac{10-3}{6} [/tex]

[tex] \frac{7}{6} [/tex]

OR

[tex] 1\frac{1}{6} [/tex]
