In the late 1960s and part of the 1970s, at the start of his career, he worked as a Stage Lighting Director in the music industry. Then, he studied architecture in Italy and England, and undertook several architectural projects in London.

He started working on set design in the mid-1980s as an assistant to some British production designers. Early in his career, he worked on the set of the movie “Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes” (1984) with the set designer, Stuart Craig. The following year, he worked on the movie set of “Revolution” (1985), with the set designer, Ashetton Gorton.

Arthur Max started as an independent set designer after 1985 when he began working on TV commercials. For the next 10 years, he worked on commercials for directors such as David Fincher and Ridley Scott. He went on to work with these directors when they started making movies.
