Barriers to communication greatly affects the communication process as a whole, it can cause communication less effective

There are four basic components when it comes to communication which are:

  • encoding
  • medium of transmission
  • decoding
  • feedback

Problems with any one of these components can affect the communication process as a whole.

  • Encoding - this is the process of translating your thoughts and information into communicable words - if you don't do this right, the entire communication process will be off because you would not be communicating what you want.

  • medium of transmission - this is what you send the message through such as a letter or text message - you need to choose one that is most appropriate for the type of message to be sent. For instance, business letters go via email not text messaging so that the right people get it.

  • decoding - this is how the receiver interprets the message - if they misinterpret it, the whole process would be affected because the message would not be transmitted effectively.

  • feedback - this is how the receiver responds to the message - if they do not respond appropriately, again the process will not be successful because you only initiated the process to gain a response. If you do not get that response, there was no point.

In conclusion, all components of the communication process are important and a disruption with either of them can affect the entire process.
