The Americans wanted to expand westward because of Manifest Destiny and  Missouri Compromise. They were willing to go to war to secure the west because of the question of Slavery.

Americans westward expansion was influenced by the economic and political gains due to Manifest destiny and Missouri Compromise.

  • Manifest destiny: It was the belief that Americans are bound to expand to rule whole province.
  • Missouri Compromise: In 1820 a compromise was made to make balance in Congress, this compromise partially banned slavery and left new territories on future.

These two elements made Americans divided on the issue of slavery and therefore they were willing to go to war to secure the west.
