Confucius is an important Chinese historical figure who adopted and taught a set of morals and life lessons that some people still practice. The morals and life lessons showed how the ruling class of China should behave. Confucius gave up a good-paying government job to teach about what he called “beautiful conduct.” His followers, called disciples, listened to his teachings and wrote them down. These written documents formed a social code, or way that a society should behave. The social code was passed down to each generation of the ruling class. Confucius believed that if those in authority set a good example, those in the lower classes would follow accordingly.
