In paragraph 16, how does Lizabeth react when Joey suggests that they all go to Miss Lottie’s house? How does Lizabeth feel later that afternoon as a result? Find evidence in the text to explain why Lizabeth does not join in the group’s “merriment” when they return home.

Answer:

Lizabeth and the other kids believe it's a good idea. They enjoyed messing with Miss Lottie so they went over to destroy her flowers with pebbles and stones. Later that afternoon, Lizabeth starts to feel guilty. Lizabeth didn't join the kids in their merriment because she was ashamed of herself; "Suddenly I was ashamed,..." When she was at Miss Lotties house she had believe it was a good idea but looking back on it in a more mature way, she felt bad about it. To display this, Collier writes, "... but the woman in me flinched at the thought of the malicious attack that I had led."
