In 1810, Fr. Hidalgo led the first movement toward Mexican independence. He was captured and executed by the Spanish government. Jose Maria Morelos led the movement after Fr. Hidalgo’s death. He, too, was executed. Later, Agustin de Iturbide and Vicente Guerrero joined forces and were able to defeat Spanish forces for independence in 1821 after a period of political unrest under the rule of King Ferdinand in Spain.
