Southern states heavily depended on slavery to work in the plantation fields. It was a tough work to work and take care of the farming fields, so slaves played a big role to do that. Basically, there was no industry in the south compared to the industrial Northern states. For instance, tobacco in Virginia was the most important cash crop. It is said that it was John Rolfe who brought some tobacco seeds from Trinidad, a Caribbean island. These tobacco leaves were more grey and bitter than European tobacco. So more successful and with more acceptance. That is how they had to be correctly seeded and harvested.
