The Lorax and The Truax are both different children's books based on the environment. Dr. Seuss, author of The Lorax, is an extremely well known children's author so I would believe he is credible. I am not sure whether or not I believe Terri Birkett is reliable due to the fact that her business is in the hardwood flooring industry and she seems like she is trying to make it look as though her profession isn't ruining the environment.
I think that in the Lorax, the Lorax has an ecocentric worldview because he tries to protect with the trees, the animals that lost their habitats due to the loss of trees, and the people who would be affected by the lack of trees. The Once-ler would have an anthropocentric worldview because he disregarded the trees and didn't care about the animals that would lose a habitat. He only cared about making his Thneeds to sell to people for a profit. In the Truax, honestly I think that the Truax has an anthropocentric worldview, because he did plant trees but first he cut them down and he also acted very nonchalant about certain species going extinct. I also believe the Guardbark is like the Lorax in his ideas so I think that he also has an ecocentric worldview.
The Lorax reflects a social trap in the way that the Once-ler used Truffula trees to knit his Thneeds, but eventually ran out of trees. I also belive that there is a social trap reflected in the Truax when the Truax cuts down trees to prevent wildfires which would destroy habitats, but causes other species to go extinct.
I think that these stories contribute to environmental literacy because they are aimed toward children and help the younger generation to understand our environmental problems without being too harsh or inappropriate. In years to come, the children who read these stories will be adults and they will be the ones making differences in society so it is good to educate them on the environment while they are young.
The Truax explains that we can use resources as long as we can replace them and don't harm anything else when he plants new trees and explains that houses can't be made out of metal or other materials because they will run out. This shows that the Truax sugguests that we can maintain a balanced sustainability. On the other hand, the Lorax doesn't think that humans can use the resources without harming the environment, other species, and even themselves. The Lorax sugguests that there needs to be steps taken to maintain a balanced sustainability.
I believe that the main message of the Lorax is that if we keep living anthropocentrically, our lives would be affected in the end. This is sugguested when the Lorax attempts to stop the Once-ler from harming the environment to make goods to sell to people. I also believe the main message of the Truax is that as long as we can take care of the environment, we can use its resources. This is sugguested when the Truax cuts down trees to use as lumber for his business, but plants more because he knows we will need them in the future and doesn't want for the world to run out.
To give my honest opinion about the Truax, I do not believe it. I think that it was created to give the hardwood flooring industry a better reputation whereas the Lorax is brutally honest and spells out what our future could end up as if we don't take action. I enjoy the Lorax because it tells a sad story, but also tells us as the readers what we can in order to make our future better. At the end of the Lorax, when the Lorax leaves the word "unless" it gives a sense of hope, like we know that we are headed in a bad direction, but there is hope that we can fix it.
