Your town has recently had a large influx of immigrants from Mexico and a few Asian countries. The editor of your local newspaper writes an editorial in which he suggests that the high school’s varsity sport program is an effective tool for establishing good intergroup relations in the town. You read it and conclude that he has not thought of the challenges faced when trying to use sports in this way. You write a letter to the editor in which you explain these things to the readers of the paper. What does your letter say?

Good morning! I have read your editorial and although the good meaning behind it is to be praised and recognized, I fear there are challenges you may not have thought of. Firstly, the new immigrant kids will have linguistic differences. Unless the varsity sports coach speaks Spanish and the language spoken in the asian countries, there will be many linguistic barriers. Secondly, being accommodating to different cultural differences needs to happen or at least talked about in their native language so that everyone understands the rules of the sports programs and the cohesiveness of a group. Finally, it must be explained thoroughly to the families of the immigrant kids exactly what the requirements are for the sports programs and how they will happen. I urge you to ponder this and publish a revised editorial for your readers to fully understand. Thank you!
