The miner would shovel some type of material into a hopper then it would regularly add some water and rock the cradle back and forth.. (side to side) just to sift material onto the apron below.
Placer mining is done in streams and the gold is found by swirling it in pans. The heavier gold sinks to the bottom and is picked out, sorted by color and kept.
