As a cell grows, the ratio of surface area to volume decreases.

As the volume of the cell increases, it has more organelles and material inside. These materials have high demands for oxygen and therefore energy. The surface area is not sufficient to accomodate to the high demands of the cell which is why a cell divides in mitosis
