These two characters are King Arthur's knights.  Lancelot is peaceful and forgiving.  Gawain is a hostile and vengeful person.  He is also a coward.  Lancelot is NOT a coward.  

Lancelot dies by Gawain's hand.  Gawain wanted revenge on Lancelot because L killed G's brother.  Gawain was determined to convince King Arthur that Lancelot was a traitor.  

Lancelot was chivalrous and fell in love with the King's wife - Guinevere.  

Gawain was known for being a ladie's man.  The text would actually call him a courtly lover.  He thinks that he is loyal and honest.  

My final example would be that Guinevere was a beautiful queen and her life took a bad turn when she fell in love with Lancelot.  Lancelot was known to have been Arthur's bravest and most loyal knight.  NOT Gawain.

Lo...and behold - Gawain was finally wounded in a fight, repented of his sins, and died forgiving Lancelot.
