VIOLENCE IN THE MEDIA: THE MAIN CAUSE OF JUVENILE CRIME
The age we are in is the age of the internet. An age that is characterized by a massive use of the social media. The social media is a large virtual world that is dominated by the youths, a place where several trending issues ranging from entertainment, politics, sciences, and technology are discussed.
Young ones are easily influenced and intimidated by what they see around them and the social circles that they belong. This is an age where all forms of immoral and uncivil actions are flaunted on the media with no iota of fear for the authorities. Activities like cyber crimes, nudity, drug abuse are rampant on the media and juveniles who are constant users of the media can find these activities appealing to them due to their naive nature. Journalists and social media influencers are not also helping matters as they celebrate these criminals parading themselves as celebrities on their platforms. There is no equivocation to the fact that violence in the media contribute a great deal to the juvenile crimes in our societies.
To drastically reduce violence in the media, government should make strict laws that guide the use of the media. Security agencies should closely monitor the activities taking place on the media and any personality who perpetuates any unlawful act through the social media should be made to face the wrath of the law. Juveniles should also be educated on the correct use of the media and should be made to know that not everything seen on the media is worthy of emulation. Guardians should also be close to their wards and show them the model of a responsible lifestyle. This will prevent these young ones from being unreasonably controlled by what they see on the media.
