These are receptors which act through a second messenger,They are not directly connected to the opening of ion channels.They are found in the membrane of the Eukaryotas, and are confined to membrane surfaces and in vesicles.
Histamine, dopamine, muscarinic acetycholine receptors are examples of thezse receptors.
Theses receptors have ligands (neurotransmitters) which binds to the post synaptic membrane to cause opening of sodium ion s channels,for the action potential to be transmitted from the pre-synaptic to post -synaptic neuron.
In the mechanism, the neurotransmitter bind with the receptors which act as the transducers, this then activates the G-proteins.The latter in turn activate the primary effector.The resultant effect is the activation of the secondary messenger. which leads to opening of the channels
This sequence of events leading to the opening of the channels takes longer , therefore theses receptors are not involved in opening of channels involved in fast responses.But they have a long lasting effed compare to the ionotropic receptors,( the ligand-gated ion channels) which are faster ,
