The poem is opened by, “Two bodies face to face, Are at times two waves, And the night is an ocean.” Throughout the poem, Octavio Paz uses metaphors in each of the stanzas to describe the relationship between both two people. Each aspect of the relationship is accompanied by a different relationship to the universe. The word “night” in that poem describes how the relationship of both people is a fate that cannot be changed.
