-17 -5 (x + 3) = 3x   Use the Distributive Property
  -17 -5x - 15 = 3x   Combine like terms (-17 and -15)
       -32 - 5x = 3x   Add 32 to both sides
              -5x = 3x + 32   Subtract 3x from both sides
              -8x = 32   Divide both sides by -8
                 x = -4
