The Whig Party was founded in the winter of 1833-1834 in Washington by national republicans such as Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams, as well as Southerners such as W. P. Mangum. Initially the Whig party had as its axis of action the opposition to policies headed by Andrew Jackson, especially the transfer of the deposit of the Second Bank of the United States. The party also attracted the support of rights defenders from Southern states, such as John Tyler, offended by the strong nationalism that Jackson maintained against South Carolina during the Nullification crisis. The Whigs also promoted the supremacy of Congress over the executive actions taken by Jackson, such as moving deposits from the bank without the consent of Congress, or vetoing the bank's recharge. Ridiculing "King Andrew," the American Whigs took the name of the English Whig Party, which opposed the power of the monarchy and supported Parliamentary control.
