The wall of the GI tract has four layers.
Firstly, the mucosa which is the innermost layer of mucous membrane.

Lastly, serosa a superficial layer made up of areolar connective tissue and simple squamous epithelium. It forms a portion of the peritoneum,, so called as visceral peritoneum.
