There have been a plethora of changes to ballet costumes. For e.g around the 18th century, ballet costumes had undergone sweeping reforms. And also the type of costumes reflected the aristocratic culture in which ballet was fist formed. Also in the 18th century ballet techniques became more demanding and dancers needed less constricting costumes. You can also consider the changes that came for both genders with the inventions of the tights and the leotard which allowed for maximum movement also allowing ballet technique to become more complex. You can associate ballets with tutus which were fashionable and great for mobility. In today’s ballet you will mostly see tights, leggings, leotards, etc. Also tunics in ballet were made famous by Isadora Duncan and even Ana Paplova. They shedded off their shoes, tights, tutus and replaced them with flow, Greek-inspired tunics.
Hope this helps!
