The direct cause of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand at Sarajevo on 28 June 1914. The rivalry between the Great powers is what caused WWI to break out. Also due to the Mutual Defense Alliances,  imperialism, militarism, nationalism, and finally because of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
