When should the ves ending be added to form plural nouns?

Generally speaking, "-ves" should be added to words that end in "-f" or "-fe" to make them plural. Examples of this are knife becoming knives, half becoming halves, and wife becoming wives. Words ending in "-ff" just receive a "-s" to become plural, and example being sniff becoming sniffs.
