The dictatorship lasted for 20 years and reached it height in 1970s with so called “Brazilian Miracle “ The Military tortured and arrested the dissenters and even censored the media During this reign the armed force got divided into two parts one part in support of the dictatorship and the other advocating communism.

During this era torture and abuse dissident, harassment of journalist, censorship on press became prevalent. The kidnapping of foreign ambassador in Brazil unsettled the military government. The action of guerillas movement and antigovernment declaration led to the increase in repressive measures.
