2 Samuel Chapter 22 is an exaltation from King David recounting how the Lord had rescued him from his enemies, including the mad King Saul, who tried to kill him more than once. In this song of praise, David calls God his deliverer, his fortress, and the rock in which he takes refuge. God is also his shield and salvation.
David recounts in 2 Samuel Chapter 22 that when he was surrounded by enemies — and he has been surrounded by enemies many times — he called on God and God saved him. Whenever David called out to the Lord when he was in trouble, when he was facing death or destruction, the Lord rescued him.
David says the Lord heard his cry for help all the time and God grew angry on his behalf. He paints a picture of a fiery God who makes the earth tremble. Not only that, the God of David comes down from the heavens Himself to help David, riding cherubim, causing a dark rain to fall and lightning bolts to appear.
David also praises God for letting him be the leader of his people, for the submissiveness of the foreigners who come to him and how people who hear Him obey Him. And David once again praises God for rescuing him from his foes, including violent men like Saul. He praises God for showing everlasting kindness to David and to David’s descendants.
