The stage directions here show that Mr. Frank has survived the Holocaust. Which him and his family has been hiding for two years. A lot of time has gone by. Since the Holocaust is now over the have to say goodbye to the memories they have gad in attic. The have to start life over but since they have aged they don´t know how much time they will have left to make new memories.
