What is an example of directional selection in nature?
- The first black peppered moth was discovered in 1811, in the early years of the industrial revolution.
- Peppered moths typically have a white coloring. However, more and more of the dark moths were observed as the industrial revolution grew.
- This growth can be attributed to the industrial revolution's use of direction selection. Large cities experienced a sharp rise in pollution, soot, and dust during the industrial revolution.
- There were hardly any light-colored moths found in these cities. The pale-colored moths predominated in woodlands that were far from major cities.
- Numerous studies on the ecology and evolution of these moths have demonstrated that an increase in the population of black moths is a result of their improved ability to escape predators.
- Predators swiftly consume the white moths, which are easiest to see on sooty, filthy buildings.
