Because of these alliances, countries were almost forced into the war, and it would have gotten even more catastrophic if countries had pulled out of the war.

The war became blown when allies opted in to defend their sides. Russia was in defense of Serbia. This made Germany to declare war on the Russians. Other countries joined in the war to defend the countries that they had ties with.
