King and many others, including schoolchildren, were arrested and sent to jail. The protests continued for days. There was not enough jail space to hold everyone. Business people were afraid their stores would be damaged. They finally agreed to allow both blacks and whites to eat at the lunch counters. They also agreed to hire more blacks.
